Abstract
137,897. Cohn, S. Jan. 13, 1919. Semaphore signals; road-vehicle signals.-Relates to turning and stopping signals for road vehicles, in which a number of plates bearing the words " right," " left," &c. normally hang within a casing from which they can be selectively swung outwards to display the required signal. The plates are pivoted on a spindle 15 in a casing the rear face of which is provided with a reflecting-surface to serve as a rear-viewing mirror. The mirror is carried in a frame detachably secured to the casing by screws. The casing is also wedge-shaped in horizontal cross-section, so that, whilst the plates are in planes at right-angles to the length of the vehicle, the mirror is inclined inwards to facilitate viewing. The casing is adjustably secured to a bracket arm 26 by means of a rounded part 29, Fig. 3, stamped in the wall of the casing and clamped between two correspondingly rounded members 28, 31 mounted on the arm which passes through the members 28, 29, 31. Member 28 bears against a transverse pin 27 passed through the arm, and member 31 is acted on by two conical wedges 33 on a transverse bolt 32. The other end of the arm is clamped to the wind-screen by a clamp, Fig. 9, comprising a fixed jaw 36 and movable jaw 38 rocking about a rounded projection 39 and tightened on the screen by screws 41. The lower ends of the plates carry pads 18 of leather, cord, &c. adapted to prevent rattling of the plates in the casing. Each plate is also formed with a lip 22 which, in the display position, comes against the operating-wire 19, which thus serves as a resilient stop. Each plate has a control wire 19, all the wires being enclosed in a flexible tube 5 and carried to a control device which is clamped to the steering-post so as to be within easy reach of the driver. The control device, Figs. 16 and 17, comprises a fan-shaped box in which are sliding rods 50 individually connected to the operating-wires 19. Provision is made for allowing turning movement between a wire 19 and its rod 50 by a sleeve 55, Fig. 19, secured to the wire by set-screws and engaging in a slot 54 in the rod, through a hole in the end of which the wire passes. Each rod 50 has a knob 53 and a spring-pressed catch 57 with a hooked end 62 adapted to engage in one of two openings 72, 73 in a cover-plate to hold the rod against accidental movement. A cover-plate 69 corresponding to each rod is held in place by screws 70 passing through slots, allowing a longitudinal adjustment. A modified form of control box is described having a single non-adjustable coverplate, the openings therein being elongated to form slots, the opposite sides of which are provided with notches or teeth in staggered relation adapted to be engaged by the hooded ends 62 of the catches.
