Abstract

1378807 Gas chromatography TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 21 Sept 1972 43736/ 72 Heading B1H A method of gas chromatography in which a sample is separated into components that are spaced apart chronologically at the outlet from a separation column, the effluent from the column being divided into first and second portions, the first portion of the effluent is trapped at said outlet with a physical separation corresponding to the spacing of peaks on a graphic record made simultaneously with the trapping of a characteristic of the second portion of said effluent comprises directing the first portion of said effluent into impingement against a moving surface for retaining some of said components thereon and moving said surface at the same speed as said graphic record whereby said retained components may be related to said record peaks. In an exemplary apparatus the effluent from the column is split into two parts; one goes to an ionisation detector the output of which gives a normal type of chromatogram, the other is trapped on a tape of paper, foil or coated fibre-glass; the tape is driven at the same speed as the material in which the normal chromatogram is produced, so that when the two are subsequently laid side by side the peaks of the chromatogram indicate the location on the tape of separated components which may be removed for analysis.
