Abstract

1378774 Blow-moulding from nestable preforms ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc 30 Dec 1971 [30 Dec 1970] 60772/71 Addition to 1338680 Heading B5A A nestable preform is converted into a non- nestable container by placing it at ambient temperature over a complementarily shaped male mandrel and locking its rim portion thereon, heating it below its rim portion to deformation temperature, placing it with the mandrel in a female mould cavity and expanding it by differential fluid pressure to form a non-nestable container having a rim portion identical with that of the preform. As shown in Fig. 1, the apparatus comprises a rotary turret 30 having eight male mandrels 32 mounted thereon. Nestable preforms 10 are deposited from dispenser 36, the turret 30 indexed to the next position where preform 10 is locked on to mandrel 32 by tamping device 38, blow moulding of the heated preform being effected in blow-mould 34 at a subsequent position of turret 30. The preform 10 has, as shown in Fig. 5, a rolled lip 18 and a bead 20 locking on to ridge 54 on mandrel 32. Mandrel 32 contains a heater 48 insulated from the rim portion of preform 10 by insulating block 42 and ducts 50 to apply or withdraw air. During heating of preform 10, air is withdrawn to retain proper seating of the preform on the mandrel. The female blow-mould 34 is movable toward and away from turret 30 to engage the preform and mandrel therein and comprises a bottom section 64 with a removal plunger 66 and split upper mould sections 68. Mould 34 can be vented during the expansion, for which air is supplied through ducts 50 of mandrel 32. After completion of blow-moulding, blow-mould 34 which is preferably chilled, is removed from the mandrel releasing locking rim 18, mould sections 68 are opened, plunger 66 raised and the product container 24 may be blown therefrom by air jet (72, Fig. 4, not shown). The container may be formed of polystyrene, polyethylene or polyvinylchloride.
