Abstract

1378754 Electro-medical apparatus PEAK TECHNOLOGIES Ltd 14 Dec 1971 [7 Sept 1971] 41720/71 Heading G1N Movements of a patient, e.g. movements of the chest wall due to respiration, are monitored using a micro-wave field enveloping at least part of the patient and sensing variations in the field, an alarm being given when the degree of movement has fallen beneath a predetermined threshold value for more than a pre-selected interval of time. As described a micro-wave transmitter is used to provide the field, and a receiver is provided to sense the Doppler frequency shift due to movement of the patient. As shown, the components included within the dashed/dotted line in Fig.5a are mounted on one printed circuit board, and those in Fig.5b on another printed circuit board. A receiver diode D1 is provided and the frequency shift is represented by a cyclically varying voltage at the output of an amplifier A1, which voltage is applied to a capacitor C7. As the patient breathes the voltage across capacitor C7 passes above and below a threshold value of a transistor VT2 which operates a relay RL 1. The contacts of this relay then make and break a clamp circuit causing a pair of lamps to blink on and off at the respiration rate. The pulses produced are applied to a selected one of three capacitors C 2 , C 3 , C 4 in an alarm circuit, Fig.6. Should breathing cease causing the relay contacts to be permanently closed and the lamps to be permanently energized, the selected capacitor is allowed to discharge and after a delay (10, 20 or 30 secs. depending on the capacitor), a noise generator is energized. A recorder may be connected across one of the lamps or to the output of amplifier A1. In an alternative, only a micro-wave transmitter is provided, and load impedance variations at the transmitter due to movements are monitored by an auxiliary oscillator. The transmitter, receiver and associated circuitry may be mounted on a scanner which is pivotally mounted on a wall, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), or which is mounted on a free-standing support, Figs.3 and 4 (not shown). The alarm circuitry may be arranged at a remote location. (For Figures see next page)
