Abstract
1378642 Classifying clay in hydrocyclone SANYO PULP CO Ltd 1 Dec 1971 55871/71. Heading B2P Clay minerals are classified according to particle size by treating a clay slurry having a 2-20% by weight of solids content under a pressure of 1-6kg/cm<SP>2</SP> in a hydrocyclone which comprises a frusto-conical portion having an axial length of 500-1500 mm and a cone angle of 3-8‹ and terminating at its narrow end into a reject outlet having a diameter of 1-8 mm. The hydrocyclone has a top cylindrical part of 70-80 mm in diameter and a vortex finder of 10-30 mm in diameter for the discharge of clay particles of the desired size. The average size of clay particles in the feed suspension is less than 30Á and the size of the desired particles recovered through the vortex finder is between 5.5 and 7.7Á. Clay particles above 50Á may be removed by screening before the suspension is fed to the hydrocyclone. Examples treating clays containing kaolin and pyrophyllite agalmatolite are given.
