Abstract

1378204 Isomerizing hydrocarbons UNION CARBIDE CORP 20 July 1972 [21 July 1971] 33942/72 Heading C5E The normal pentane and hexane in a feedstock of mixed hydrocarbons are isomerized by mixing the feedstock with hydrogen, passing it through a reactor containing a composite catalyst comprising an isomerizing zeolite component and a hydrogenating component, condensing the effluent and passing the condensate through a bed of adsorbent selective for normal paraffins, subsequently desorbing the adsorbed normal paraffins with a stream of hydrogen, and mixing this stream of hydrogen and normal paraffins with the feed to the reactor. As shown, a light naphtha is fed through line 10 and heater 13 to tank 62, where it is mixed with hydrogen and recycled normal paraffins. This mixture is fed to isomerizer 20 which contains a zeolite-andpalladium catalyst in which the zeolite is zeolite Y and has been ion-exchanged with a rareearth compound and an ammonium salt and calcined. The effluent from the isomerizer is cooled at 70 and separated at 72 into a gasphase (hydrogen and light hydrocarbons), and a liquid-phase. This liquid passes by line 60 and heater 14 to adsorption bed 18 containing calcium zeolite A. Normal hydrocarbons are adsorbed and branched-chain hydrocarbons emerge at 24, taking with them hydrogen purged from the bed. These are cooled at 30 and separated at 32, and the branched-chain hydrocarbons recovered by line 34. Gases from both separators and make-up hydrogen from line 38 are heated at 46, and passed through bed 22 to desorb normal hydrocarbons and carry them into tank 62 for recycle. When the adsorption bed 18 is saturated, the valves shown are operated for adsorption in bed 22 and desorption from bed 18. When desorption begins, the first material to emerge from the bed is the vapour remaining in it from the adsorption step. This can be bypassed round the isomerization by line 61, and the effluent switched to tank 62 when its content of normal hydrocarbons rises.
