Abstract

1377562 Recovery of metals from nickel matte ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP 21 Feb 1972 7954/72 Heading C1A Metals are recovered from a Ni-Cu matte also containing S and minor amounts of Fe and precious metals and having a Ni : S atomic ratio in excess of 1 : 1 by (a) dispersing the matte in finely-divided form into water to form an aq. slurry, and adding sufficient S or S- containing material to adjust the Ni : S atomic ratio to 1:1, (b) oxidative pressure leaching the slurry at elevated temp. in the presence of a free O 2 -containing gas to produce a NiSO 4 - containing slurry, (c) equilibrating the pressure leached slurry at a pH of 5À35 Œ 0À3 to selectively separate Ni from the slurry and then (d) separating the Ni-contaiing solution from the Ni-depleted residue. The Ni-depleted residue may be slurried in water, equilibrated and additional Ni separated or leached in H 2 SO 4 equilibrated at a pH of 3À5 Œ 0À7 to dissolve Cu therefrom and then the Cu-containing solution separated from the residue containing precious metals. The pH may. be adjusted using NiCO 3 , CaO, alkali metal hydroxides, CaCO 3 , Na 2 CO 3 or H 2 SO 4 . Fe may be removed as Fe(OH) 3 from the leach solution containing NiSO 4 by oxidation with air or H 2 O 2 .
