Abstract

1377460 Welding by pressure ANO-COIL Ltd 5 June 1973 [18 Jan 1973] 26767/73 Heading B3R In a method of and apparatus for welding together the overlapped ends of metal, e.g. aluminium, strips 10, 12 at least one and preferably two copper members 30, 34 are disposed to intervene between copper electrodes 17<SP>1</SP>, 22<SP>1</SP> by which one or more spot welds are made joining the metal strip ends together. The presence of the copper members prevents surface ridges being formed at the weld spot and thus minimizes electrode wear. The copper members may be frusto-conical and mounted as shown so as to rotate to present a fresh portion of the copper member to the electrodes as the electrodes are traversed across the strips, i.e.to make a series of spot welds. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) two flat circular rotatable discs are mounted to overlie the joint area while in another simpler embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) two flat strips of copper are placed over the joint area from one side of the strips. Where the copper members are rotatably mounted provision may be made to adjust the distance of the axis of rotation from the electrodes so as to distribute the wear on the copper members.
