1377237 Headsets STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 13 Sept 1972 42480/72 Addition to 1296882 Heading H4J A headset (Fig. 1) comprises a microphone 5 and a receiver 4 held together by a plastics horn-shaped body 1. A plastics exchanger 3 is inserted at one end into the casing of the receiver 4 and at the other end into the hornshaped body 1. The exchanger 3 in use fits over the ear. Body 1 is hollow and electrical connections from a cord connect directly to microphone 5 and via a cylindrical two contact plug 16 fixed to the exchanger 3 to the earphone 4. Plug 16 engages electrical contacts 17, 18 connected to the earphone winding. "Button" type microphones and earphones are used and have a frustbconical nipple 12, 19 (Fig. 2). The earphone 4 has an adaptor 20 snapped over nipple 19, a spherical socket accepting a ball 21 at one end of a connector 8. A push-on insert 9, also a ball, is of appropriate size and material to suit the user's ear. Earhanger 3 is of nylon and may be moved into or out of body 1 for adjustment. The adaptor 11 balls 21, 9 and connectors are of nylon, PVC or acetal polymers. Microphone 5 may be rimmed (Fig. 3, not shown) and is snapfitted into horn-shaped body 1. A P.T.F.E. speech tube 6 may be of telescopic form, or made oversize so that it can be cut to size. It fits into the ball of a ball-and-socket joint 11 in an adapter 11 which is a snap fit on the microphone nipple. The ball can be swivelled to cut off extraneous sounds. An equalizer 23 contains silk, lambs wool or porous metal and is of plastics material. The cord connects to an operator's plug (not shown) and may be supported by a lanyard. The microphone 5 is of moving iron type and requires a non-linear amplifier which may be carried by the lanyard or in the operator's plug.
