Abstract
1376727 Educational appliances WESTING- HOUSE LEARNING CORP 15 Nov 1971 52879/71 Heading G5G A teaching system comprises a video-tape recorder 19; a computer 10; a unit 11 which translates alpha-numeric information and video information fed into it respectively by the computer 10 and recorder 19 into video and audio signals for transmission via a line 12 to a video-telephone 13; and control panels 15 and 17 for operation by a student. In use, the student manipulates dials 18 on the control panel 17 to select the subject matter to be taught. The computer 10 which has the appropriate lesson programmed therein via the tape recorder 19 activates the unit 11 which sends the lesson to the video-telephone 13; the response of the student determines the progression of the lesson under the control of the computer. The response may be multiple-choice, a spelled out alpha-numeric response, or selection of several items from a matrix, and is indicated by the student pressing response buttons 16 on the control panel 15. The video-tape recorder may comprise a central bank of pre-recorded tape reels connected to a buffer unit for transferrecording the audio and visual information from selected ones of said tapes into said buffer unit, thereby permitting the pre-recorded reels in the central bank to be made available almost simultaneously to a large number of users.
