Abstract

1376546 Bituminous composition; polyolefin compositions BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 28 March 1973 [11 April 1972] 14863/73 Headings C3N and C3P A plastics composition comprises (a) 70-20% by weight of a polymer or copolymer of an olefin and (b) 30-80% by weight of a bituminous composition comprising (i) 23-88% by weight, based on the bituminous composition, of bitumen, (ii) 2-25% by weight, based on the bituminous composition, of a copolymer of one or more olefins and a cyclic olefin having an endocyclic bridge and at least two olefinic double bonds and (iii) 10-75% by weight, based on the bituminous composition, of a hydrocarbon flux oil for extending the copolymer (ii), the bituminous composition having been blown with a gas containing elemental oxygen at 150-300‹ C. The bituminous composition may also contain sulphur and polyethylene. Suitable components (a) are polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene/propylene terpolymers and ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers. Component (i) is preferably a vacuum residue derived from a Venezuelan or Middle East crude oil, component (ii) an ethylene/propylene terpolymer, e.g. a copolymer of ethylene, propylene, and dicyclopentadiene, and component (iii) an aromatic extract obtained by extracting a lubricating oil basestock with a selective solvent such as furfural or phenol. Regenerated used engine oil may be incorporated into (iii). Mixing may be carried out in a pug mill at 150-250‹ C. The plastics composition may be mixed with mineral fillers such as slate dust, limestone, talc and asbestos, preferably in quantity 5-50% by weight.
