Abstract

1376534 Assembling force fits SKF INDUSTRIAL TRADING & DEVELOPMENT CO NV 1 March 1972 [8 March 1971] 9577/72 Heading B3U [Also in Division F2] Elements, such as a hub 12 and shaft 11 or a bearing outer race 32 and stationary housing 33, Fig. 13, are secured together, permanently or releasably, by one or more closed or open lockrings 15 or segments which are of softer material than that of the elements and are forced axially and/or radially into parts 13 of the elements which have serrations which deform or cut complementary serrations in the lock-rings. In Fig. 1, the serrations are triangular-sectioned axial teeth with pyramidal deforming, or sharp cutting, ends, and the lock-rings 15 are forced axially therebetween by an end nut 16. In Fig. 7, not shown the lock-ring is an annular cylinder with chamfered leading edge, and in Fig. 8, not shown, is oval sectioned. In Fig. 9, not shown, the serrations on the outer element are inclined outwards to form a convergent wedge gap to receive the lock-ring. In Fig. 10, not shown, the lock-ring is in two parts, one inner part (24) being expanded radially into circumferential serrations (23) in the elements by coned engagement with an axially thrust outer part (25), itself engaging axial serrations (18) in the elements. This provices both a circumferential and an axial lock. In Fig. 12, not shown, a similar inner part (24) is expanded into a knurling formed by cross serrations in the elements. In Fig. 13, the outer race 32 of a bearing is secured in a housing 33 by a lock-ring 35 forced axially into a serrated recess, formed in the housing and race, by an end plate 36 and screws. In Fig. 14, not shown, an end abutment (37) is retained in the end of a ball-thread nut (38) by a lock-ring (39) arranged as in Fig. 13, but without the removable pressure applying endplate. In Fig. 15, not shown, two diametrically opposite arcuate lock segments (40), between serrated elements (41, 42), are adapted to rupture at a predetermined torque, which can be increased by using more than two segments.
