1376528 Refuse bins EMERSON ELECTRIC CO 30 Aug 1972 [2 Sept 1971] 40202/72 Heading A4A [Also in Divisions B5 and B8] A kitchen trash-compactor comprises a platen 47 movable by two sets of laterally spaced lazy tongs between a retracted position 45 above a trash loading space 51 and a compacting position inside a container 42. The tongs are operated by a screw 84 rotated by an electric motor 87. Wheels 98 at the end of the tongs roll on the upper surface of the platen which is secured to the tongs by a link 101. The platen has bottle crushing ribs 225 and a peripheral sealing flap 103 and apron 104. A trash loading door 57 is pivoted about horizontal hinges 58 to a container removal door 53. The container has a rim 48 around which the end of a bag is folded, sloping sides fitting in the compactor, and an arm 72 which prevents actuation of the motor if the container is not correctly positioned. An arm 166 can be swung, if door 57 is closed, to lock the doors 53 and 57 and to start the motor 87. During descent of the platen the starting circuit of the motor is reversed so that on stalling of the motor due to the reaction of the compacted trash or a spring 96 located around the screw 84 the motor is reversed. Wear caps 115 on the ends of a torque arm inter-connecting the two sets of the tongs move between guides 111, 112. Rubber blocks are situated at the bottom of the guides to permit lateral movement of the tongs and screw 84 if jamming occurs. This movement of the screw releases an arm 95 which stops the motor 87. Alternatively the container 42 may be a loose fit so that jamming causes the container to move and release the switch 129.
