Abstract

1376514 Laminates ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 28 Sept 1972 [19 Oct 1971] 44899/72 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions B3 and B8] A method of fabricating a container wall, e.g. a can end adapted to be provided with an integral opening device, e.g. a pull tab 14 riveted to the can end, comprises providing a metal sheet 22, e.g. of aluminium or steel or an alloy thereof having an adhesive material 24, e.g. an epoxy resin, a polyester or a polyurethane secured to one surface thereof, serving to secure to the metal sheet a continuous protective layer 26 of a partially crystalline polyolefine, a partially crystalline ethylene-olefine copolymer, a copolymer of ethylene with an acrylate or an ionomeric ethylene copolymer, scoring the metal sheet, e.g. around score line 8 to define a sector which is completely severable from the remainder of the container wall or partially severable and displaceable sufficiently to permit access to the contents of the container, while preventing fracture of the adhesively secured protective material and subsequently heating the composite sheet to a temperature of 275‹ to 375‹ F. for a period of 0À2 seconds to 4 minutes to stress relieve the protective layer and substantially eliminate microvoids established in the protective layer during the scoring operation. In a preferred embodiment, an integral upwardly directed rivet 20 is formed in the sector within the score line and heating is subsequently effected at a temperature of 300‹ to 350‹ F. for a period of 0À5 to 3 minutes. The score line may be formed using an anvil and an indenter tool.
