Abstract

1376472 Filters for biological fluids PELAM INC 10 Feb 1972 [1 March 1971] 6336/72 Heading B1D [Also in Division G2] Solid components are separated from a sample of urine (or other biological fluid) by placing it in retainer 22 (Figs. 1 and 3) communicating with a sheet 20 (Fig. 2) of microporous material supported on a recessed grid 14 in a flat plate 12 which approximates in size to a standard microscope slide, the liquid components being drawn through the filter sheet 20 and then along canal 50, through 42 and the bore of a hollow needle 16 into previously evacuated tube 26, the needle 16 being thrust through the closure 24 of tube 26. The plate 12 is preferably made of transparent plastics material such as styrene or polypropylene; and the filter sheet 20, which is also preferably transparent, may be made of a cellulose nitrate or cellulose acetate membrane having pores small enough to be impervious to the passage of liquid solely under the influence of gravity. After filtration, retainer 22 is removed from plate 12, and the plate and filter sheet 20 may be examined under a microscope. A stain preservative, comprising a dyestuff in a solvent, is preferably placed on the filter sheet to preserve the sediment and provide a clear specimen for microscopic examination. When the apparatus is used to separate bacteria from a liquid specimen, a thin layer of nutrient agar is poured onto the surface of the filter sheet. In a modification, Figs. 6-9 (not shown), the plate forming the shade has an upstanding circular rim on which is secured the filter sheet, over which fits a retainer vessel incorporating an overflow and trap for fluid in excess of a predetermined quantity, and into which fits a reservoir member incorporating the hollow needle and a protective shield for the needle. After filtration, the retainer vessel and the reservoir member are removd and a cap may be placed over the rim with the filter sheet.
