Abstract

1376342 Terebrescent materials and uses thereof MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 11 Nov 1971 [25 Nov 1970 25 Feb 1971] 52480/71 Heading C4S A cathodochromic material (e.g. in a c.r.t.) comprises wherein X is one of F, Cl, Br and I, is a halogen vacancy, 0À1#x#0À8, 0#y#4 for M=Li, 0#y#2 for M=K, and 0#z#x and wherein synthesis is by sintering without reduction. Cathodochromic mechanisms are discussed and reference made to dark trace c.r.t. applications and total erasure by light and sodalite of general formula Na 8 Al 6 SiO 6 O 24 .SO 4 . In fabrication, the mix is sintered at gradually elevated temperatures (e.g. 800‹ to 1000‹ C.) in a covered Pt crucible. Fig. 2 (not shown) indicates lattice constant γ absorption wavelength for varying x, peak absorption being the same for X-rays and electrons. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates peak coloration contrast γ, x for a 40 to 50 Ám sodalite member on an Al foil and bombarded by a 15 kv, 8 mm. beam of 100 ÁQ/ cm.<SP>2</SP> exposure; other beam parameters are disclosed. Effects of the SO 4 <SP>2-</SP> ion are discussed. The remaining Figs. (not shown), illustrate Cr or C t as a function of exposure and x values. Prior art sodalites are referred to, and methods of preparation of same, e.g. by hydrothermal treatment and reduction.
