Abstract

1376161 Frequency modulation generators MARCONI CO Ltd 17 Feb 1972 [13 March 1971] 6815/71 Heading H3A A frequency modulation generator comprises a controlled oscillator 1, mixers 3, 4 in which the output of 1 is combined with respective oscillations at a higher, lower frequencies with respect to that of oscillator 1 and derived from reference oscillators 9, 11, a frequency discriminator 15 for alternatingly sampling each mixer output in turn, a comparator 26 for comparing the amplitudes of the sampled outputs to derive a control signal for stabilizing the unmodulated centre frequency of the oscillator 1. Sampling of the mixer outputs as well as storing the sampled outputs in separate capacitors 20, 20 is achieved by gauged operation of switches 13, 14. The frequency discriminator 15 includes a squaring amplifier 16, a monostable circuit producing pulses of constant duration and an integrating circuit 18, 19 to provide output at D.C. levels dependent on the input rate. A modulating signal may be applied at 27 to the oscillator 1 and the time constant of circuit 18, 19 is such that the control loop is inoperative in respect of the frequency modulated output of the oscillator 1.
