Abstract
1376159 Proximity sensors SIEMAG SIEGENER MASCHINENBAU GmbH 20 Dec 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 59060/71 Heading G1N In order to place the end of a metal strip coil 1 in the required position for further processing the end is sensed by an inductive sensor 8 bearing via rollers 10 on the surface of the coil and the sensor output used to control a motor driving the coil 1. Two inductive sensing elements 12, 13 are mounted between the rollers 10 set back from the surface thereof and vertically offset relative to each other so that when the rollers bear against the coil 1 the coil moves past the sensing elements successively as it rotates. The sensing elements 12, 13 are connected to respective coupling elements each supplied by an oscillator. In the retracted position of the sensing head 8 the oscillator outputs are coupled through the coupling elements to respective inputs of a comparator so that no output signal is produced. When the sensing head 8 is moved against the coil the latter damps the oscillator output at the coupling elements and there is again no output from the comparator. However as the head 8 runs over the end of the coil as the latter rotates there is a reduction in the damping of one of the oscillators and an unbalance signal is produced by the comparator. Alternatively the sensing elements may each include primary and secondary windings so that the strip varies the coupling between the coils when the primary is energized. In another arrangement the two sensing arms are connected in respective arms of an A.C. bridge, Fig.4 (not shown) the output of which is fed to an adjustable threshold amplifier. Control circuit, Fig.3 (not shown). This circuit permits the coil to be rotated slowly until an unbalance signal is produced by the comparator. This signal causes an inductively acting pulse generator coupled to the motor driving the coil to operate so that when a predetermined number of pulses have been produced the motor is switched off and a stripper lowered into engagement with the coil. The motor then reverses in direction to allow the coil to be unwound and runs for a predetermined time set by a timer.
