Abstract

1376079 Foamed imide/amide/isocyanurate polymers UPJOHN CO 7 Feb 1972 [1 March 1971] 5580/72 Headings C3C and C3R A foamed polymer containing isocyanurate, carbodiimide and amide and/or imide linkages is made by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with 0À06-0À6 equivalents (per equivalent of the isocyanate) of a polycarboxylic compound containing at least two carboxylic groups selected from free carboxylic acid or anhydride groups, in the presence of a catalytic amount respectively of a homocyclic polyepoxide, a trimerization of the isocyanate catalyst (to produce isocyanurates), a catalyst for the reaction of an isocyanate and carboxylic group to form an imide or amide and a catalyst for the conversion of isocyanate to carbodiimide. A blowing agent may be present. In the examples, the foamed polymer was made by reacting polymethylene polyphenyl polyisocyanate with 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP>-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride in the presence of a glycidyl ether of a novolac resin, an organosilicone surfactant, methyl alcohol, N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>11</SP>-tris-(dimethylaminopropyl)-S-hexahydrotriazine (as trimerization catalyst), triethylenediamine (as the isocyanate/carboxylic catalyst) and 1- phenyl-3-methyl-2-phospholene-1-oxide (as carbodiimide catalyst).
