Abstract

1375724 Discharging liquid by fluid-pressure L G ERICKSON 4 Oct 1971 46146/71 Heading F1R [Also in Division F2] A self emptying hose comprises an inner hose collapsible along substantially its whole length; an outer conduit surrounding the inner hose, the length of each of the hose and conduit being many times greater than its transverse dimension; means coupled with the hose and the conduit for sealing the junctions between the ends thereof, and a mass of compressible fluid within or in fluid communication with the interior of said outer conduit and the exterior of the inner hose sufficient to collapse the inner hose along substantially its entire length to force substantially all the fluid there from when the fluid-pressure in the inner hose falls below said fluid-pressure of said source to thereby empty the inner hose. As shown in Fig. 1 the source of fluid-pressure in the intermural space may be derived from an auxiliary tank 13. In this embodiment the distended inner hose completely fills the outer conduit. To ensure that all the liquid in the hose is expressed when emptying a smaller diameter substantially non-collapsible perforated tube 16 is inserted within the inner hose to prevent formation of trapped pockets of fluid. Likewise a similar perforate tube 17 is provided in the inter space to ensure even gas distribution during emptying or filling of the inner hose. The tubes 16, 17, may be replaced by internal projections on hose and conduit to prevent total collapse or filling respectively. As shown in Fig. 3 the inner hose, when distended, does not fill the outer conduit. The auxiliary tank may thus be dispensed with and the pressure source stored in the inter space 22. The device (s) employed to prevent the accumulation of liquid pockets in the inner house may be omitted at one end whereby a shut-off valve action may be achieved at that end. The hose and conduit may be of nylon reinforced plastics. A particular application is in emptying irrigation hose prior to repositioning the hose.
