Abstract
1375636 Flame - retardant copolymers STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 7 July 1972 [8 July 1971] 31870/72 Heading C3P Emulsion copolymers having fire-retardant properties comprise (a) at least one halogencontaining monomer, (b) 1 to 90% by wt. of at least one compound of the formula wherein X is H, CN, aryl, C 1 -C 18 alkyl or -PO(OR)(OR<SP>1</SP>) and R and R<SP>1</SP> are C 1 to C 18 hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl groups and may be joined to form a ring and (c) optionally one or more further monomers, preferably forming up to 30% by wt. of the copolymer. The copolymers may be used for coating, impregnating &c. by themselves or, preferably, in combination with a normally inflammable polymer substrate. The combination is preferably made by mixing emulsions of the two polymers; many suitable addition and condensation polymer substrates are mentioned. Conventional fire-retardants and/or other conventional additives such as plasticizers, stabilizers, lubricants, fillers &c. may also be added. An example describes the emulsion copolymerization of vinyl chloride and bis(#-chlorethyl)vinylphosphonate and blending of the product with a poly(butyl acrylate) emulsion to make a film-forming composition. Copolymers of bis-(#-chloroethyl)vinylphosphonate with vinyl bromide or with vinyl chloride and N- methylol acrylamide are also specifically mentioned.
