Abstract

1375629 Developing device INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 6 Nov 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 51119/72 Heading G2H In a magnetic brush developing device the magnets 69, 71, 73 are arranged with respect to the applicator 45 such that a primary magnetic field serves to hold the developer powder to the applicator and a control field serves to exclude the powder from each of two edge portions of the applicator. These portions may be the opposite end regions of the applicator surface and for this purpose the magnet 69 is axially shorter than magnets 71 and 73 such that its fringe field exerts the control effect. Magnet 69 may be replaced by two separate magnets. The magnets 69, 71 and 73 are arranged such that the primary field is tangential to the surface of the applicator in the regions 75 and 77 and perpendicular thereto in the region 81. Guide-plate 48 directs developer from a cascade device on to the applicator. Doctor blade 51 controls the height of the magnetic brush. Plate 61 serves to direct surplus developer to a sump.
