Abstract

1375348 Full-face disc brakes; protective covers; cooling H KLAUE 9 Feb 1973 [10 Feb 1972 7 April 1972 21 June 1972] 6481/73 Heading F2E A liquid-cooled disc brake is located in a fixed hollow axle body arranged between two wheels, the brake being associated with the inner ends of two half shafts each driven by one of the wheels and removable axially; after partial shaft removal the brake assembly may be withdrawn from the axle body through an opening normally having a removable cover. In the simplest embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the half shafts are driven directly by the wheel hubs, each half shaft has s single lamination, with friction linings, splined to its inner end, and each lamination co-operates with a common central rotationally fixed brake ring and two similar outer brake rings; one outer brake ring is also axially fixed, and brake application is by a compressed-air-operated ball- and-ramp device. Each brake ring has a compartment for liquid coolant circulated through an external heat exchanger. In Figs. 4, 6, 8, the half shafts are each driven faster than the wheels by planetary gearing 4-7, Fig. 4, the removable cover 10 1 , 10 2 , Fig. 4, has downward extensions 10 3 , 10 4 , each supporting a sleeve 14 or 15, Fig. 6, and a brake carrier 12 or 13, and seven brake rings are located by three bolts 16 1 -16 3 , Fig. 8, mounted between the brake carriers. The hollow interiors of all the brake rings are connected in series for cooling liquid by connections such as 35, 36, Fig. 8. The motor for the circulating pump and radiator fan is switched on when the brakes are applied and switched off by a thermostat. The central brake ring 174, Fig. 6, is axially fixed, so the brakes for the two wheels can be applied independently-wheel 1 by annular hydraulically-operated piston 29 and wheel 2 by piston 30. The brake rings are made of copper containing 1% chromium. Coolant circulation may be in parallel instead of in series. The axle body compartments 3 3 and 3 4 , Fig. 6, are sealed off from the brake space 23 and partly filled with oil. The brake assembly, after removal from the axle body, may be partially dismantled without disconnecting the coolant conduits, for the purpose of replacing the laminations 22 1 to 22 6 , which are normally splined on hub member 20 or 21, splined in turn on half axle 8 or 9. In the system of Figs. 15, 16, each of the two pairs of wheels of a semi-trailer is provided with brakes as described for Figs. 4, 6, 8. The coolant spaces of the brake rings are connected in parallel in each case, and the two brake assemblies share a common coolant radiator 218, pump 219, fan 225, motor 220 and thermostat 224. Wheel 201 has an electro-mechanical anti-locking sensor 213 3 engaging with the inner gear of the planetary transmission 201 1 and delivering a signal to an electromagnetic valve 213 1 if a predetermined angular deceleration is exceeded. The valve controls the pneumatic booster of an hydraulic piston valve 213 7 controlling the brake. The other wheels are similarly provided, and the electromagnetic valves are all fed by a common compressed-air conduit 217 controlled by the driver.
