Abstract

1375013 Automatic control of reactive power B B C BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 26 Oct 1971 [28 Oct 1970] 49769/71 Heading G3R [Also in Division H2] An induction crucible furnace having induction coils R1, X1 &c. and compensation capacitors C1, C4, &c. also incorporates further capacitors C10, C11 selectively shuntable by a switching network S1-S6 across any of the coils, the network being controlled by compensation and load balancing regulators which respond to respective current transformers f1, f4 &c. On the assumption that the compensating reactive power is always greater than the highest balancing reactive power, all the reactive power components can be combined into a capacitor bank which includes capacitors C10, C11 (shown schematically in the figure). It is stated that each capacitor C7-C9 has a power rating which is such as to compensate the maximum inductive power of its coil, and is coupled to transformers fl, f4 &c. in such a way that no compensating action appears to be required and so that the available balancing power therefrom appears to the balancing regulator to be an inductive one. This regulator then causes S1-S6 to switch enough capacitance from C10, C11 to make up the difference between the required balancing power and the apparent inductive reactive power provided by C7 &c.
