Abstract

1374773 Fluid bearings INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd 25 Aug 1972 [25 Aug 1971] 39868/71 Heading F2A [Also in Division H2] The moving member of a linear actuator is supported relative to the stationary member by a fluid bearing. A hollow, axially-movable shaft 1 carries a support 3 for a coil 4 which moves adjacent a polepiece 9 of a stationary magnet 8. The shaft floats in two cylindrical air bearings 2 each having an annular groove 13, to which air is supplied (11, 12), and apertures 14 through which the air is conveyed to the shaft/bearing interface. The support 3 is guided by thrust pads 10 co-operating with a rail 6, each pad including (Fig. 4b), a ring of apertures 16 through which air is supplied to the pad/rail interface, and a central aperture 17 through which the air is exhausted via a hollow pivoted tube (20, Fig. 4a, not shown). The apertures 14, 16 are formed by brass or jewel watchmakers' bearings. The actuator is used to position a magnetic recording head.
