Abstract
1374263 Neopentyl esters IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Feb 1972 [12 March 1971] 6673/71 Heading C2C Esters of polyols containing a neopentyl group are prepared by reacting an olefine with carbon monoxide and an aliphatic monohydric alcohol (1-4C) in the presence of a Group VIII metal carbonyl catalyst and not more than 10% of a Lewis base, oxidizing the carbonyl in the reaction product with a gas containing free oxygen, fractionally distilling the product, and converting the ester to one with a polyol containing a neopentyl group by hydrolysis and esterification with the polyol or by transesterification with the polyol. Cobalt carbonyl is the preferred catalyst, with aliphatic amides, heterocyclic bases, nitriles and lactams as the Lewis bases. The ester may be converted by hydrolysing and re-esterifying with the polyol preferably with a catalyst such as alkyl titanate, or alternatively by transesterifying in the presence of a catalyst such as sodium isopropoxide or phenate. An example describes the reaction of octene-1 to form methyl nonanoate, followed by the formation of pentaerythritol tetranonanoate by esterification of the acid or transesterification of the methyl ester.
