Abstract

1374178 Sockets; dowels H ZENH€USERN 13 Nov 1972 [19 Nov 1971] 52239/72 Heading F2H [Also in Division E2] To anchor a structure such as a rung (19) of a ladder in a bore 2 in a wall 1, a socket is used which comprises a hollow sleeve 3 having on its inner and outer surfaces spaced and staggered radial projections 5, 6 defining oblique surfaces running in opposite directions so that when the sleeve is force fitted in the bore and the structure in the socket, the projections resist forces tending to pull the structure from the wall, and the gaps 8 defined between adjacent projections 6, which may be of unequal circumferential extent, form a labyrinth seal. The projections 6 may be helically disposed about the socket or be formed in circumferential rings. To resist rotation of the socket in the bore 2 the sleeve may be provided with longitudinal fins 18. The internal bore 4 of the socket may be rectangular or circular in section, and if the structure (19) has a hollow end portion 11, a closure piece 13 having inclined projections 14, 17 as shown in Fig. 2 may be inserted into the open end 12 to fasten the portion 11 in the bore 4. The socket is preferably made from a plastics material such as an acetal resin, polycarbonate resin, polyethylene terephthalate or nylon.
