Abstract

1373854 Alumina bodies NORTON CO 3 May 1972 [10 May 1971 (2)] 20491/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] A method of making a strong, high surface area alumina body comprises mixing microcrystalline platy boehmite of particle size less than 100 microns, with a dilute aqueous monobasic acid which acid has an anion with ionic size no larger than that of propanoic acid to form a dry freeflowing particulate mix of aggregates, forming said mix by pressure into discrete shaped bodies, drying said bodies and firing. The acid is preferably formic or nitric, but also specified are hydrochloric, acetic and propanoic acid. A catalytically active metal or metal forming compound may be incorporated into the body by adding it to the acid/boehmite mix prior to the pressure forming. The monolithic polycrystalline body so formed, with a surface area greater than 10 sq. m. per. g. and a wall thickness at some point of less than 1/16 inch is claimed per se.
