Abstract

1373484 Auxiliary axle suspensions LEAR SIEGLER Inc 20 Sept 1973 44174/73 Heading B7D In an auxiliary axle suspension comprising coil springs 48 which lift the axle 32 when air springs 38 are deflated and hold the axle in an inoperative position with the wheels 18 on the axle clear of the road, each coil spring 48 acts through a lever 44 which is mounted by means of a pivot 46 on the vehicle frame 14 and connected to the axle by a cable or chain 60. The lever 44 is arranged so that the distance of the line of action of the spring 48 from the pivot 46 decreases and the distance of the line of action of the chain 60 from the pivot 46 increases as the axle is lowered by inflating the air springs 38 with the result that load imposed on the air springs 38 by the coil springs 48 in the operative position of the axle is reduced and the load-carrying capacity of the axle correspondingly increased.
