1373361 Clay composition ENGLISH CLAYS LOVERING POCHIN & CO Ltd 22 Dec 1971 [8 Jan 1971] 1113/71 Heading C1J A composition of clays comprises any two of or all three of (a) a first ball clay having a SiO2 content not more than 75 wt. per cent, Fe2O3+TiO2 content not more than 3.5 wt. per cent and a carbonaceous matter content of not more than 1À0 wt. per cent and containing at least 40% by weight of particles smaller than 1 micron equivalent spherical diameter, (b) a second ball clay having a SiO2 content of not more than 50 weight per cent, a Fe2O3 + TiO2 content of not more than 3À5 weight per cent, and a carbonaceous matter content of not more than 20 weight per cent and containing at least 40 wt. per cent of particles of equivalent spherical diameter less than 1 micron and (c) a coarse residual koalin having a Fe2O3 + TiO2 content of less than 1À5 wt. per cent, and consisting of 30% by weight or less of particles of spherical diameter larger than 53 microns, from 30% to 95 wt. per cent of particles larger than 10 microns and 20 wt. per cent or less of particles smaller than 2 microns. None of (a), (b) or (c) exceed 50% by weight of the composition and may each comprise at least 25% by weight of the composition. 10 to 40% by weight of fluxing agent (e.g. defluorinated Cornish stone), 0 to 40% by weight of medium grade ceramic kaolin, and up to 30 wt. per cent ground silica may be included in the composition. The composition containing a fluxing agent may be mixed with water, introduced into a mould, pressed at 0À5 to 10 tons per square inch and fired at 1000‹ C. to 1400‹ C. In Example 1, 50% by weight of a blend consisting of equal proportions by weight of (a) 1st ball clay, (b) 2nd ball clay, (c) coarse residual kaolin, 35À8 wt. per cent defluorinated Cornish stone and 14À2 wt. per cent medium grade ceramic kaolin was made into a slurry with which water slurry was deflocculated with sodium silicate to form a casting slip. In Examples II and III, other compositions of the blend, medium grade ceramic kaolin, defluorinated Cornish stone, ground silica and cobalt stain are described.
