Abstract

1372970 Automatic control of programme ETUDES ET BONNETERIE SA 24 Feb 1972 [5 March 1971] 8573/72 Heading G3N [Also in Division G5] A programme control tape 1, bearing pre-reversal and reversal command data, is fed by flanges 2, 4 driven by a motor 3. The tape, which is transparent, is read by a multi-track optical reader 13 and illuminated through a conduit 14. The tape is wound between spools 7, 8 which are driven by the motor 3 through a chain 9 and chain wheels 10-12. A permanent magnet coupling device 18 is interposed between the shaft of the motor 3 and the chainwheel 10 and a second coupling device 19 connected to the motor shaft is used to retard the tape when the motor 3 is deenergized. The spools 7, 8 are each driven from the wheels 11, 12 through an electro-magnetic clutch 25 and a D.C. electric motor 23 is provided on the shaft to the spool. In operation, the sensing of pre-reversal data by the reader 13 causes the de-energization of the clutch 25 and the energization of the motor 23 in a sense tending to rotate the take-up spool 7, 8 in the opposite direction. A loop of tape then forms between the winding spool and drive flanges 2, 4. The subsequent sensing of reversal data causes the drive motor 3 to instantaneously reverse and the clutch 25 of the alternate take-up spool 8, 7 to be energized. The subsequent sensing of the prereversal data causes the motor 23, which is now rotating so as to feed the tape, to be de-energized. The programme tape is continuously transferred in alternate directions between the spools 7, 8 and the programme data employed to control a textile machine.
