Abstract

1372778 Making bags and lined boxes; seaming non-metallic sheet material SIG SCHWEIZERISCHE INDUSTRIE GES 1 Sept 1972 [1 Sept 1971] 40531/72 Headings B5D and B5K A bag making apparatus comprises a hollow axially displaceable mandrel 4, tongs 11 which are reciprocable in the axial direction of the mandrel and can grip rim folds 60, formed along two opposed edge regions of the bag bottom, to draw a tube 6 of weldable or sealable material over the mandrel, welding or sealing jaws 33, 34 for producing a bottom seam in each bag and which carry projections 64 for forming, in cooperation with chamfered bottom folding edges of the mandrel, the rim folds 60, and inserts 14 which are slidably mounted in cut-outs adjacent the bottom of the mandrel and co-operate with pivotable pressure members 30 to grip the tube and disengage the seamed bottom of the tube from the mandrel. In operation a preformed tube or a web 2 which has been tubed and longitudinally sealed or welded by a jaw 8, is drawn over the mandrel by the tongs 11 pulling a bottom sealed or weld bag length of the tube down to a table and if desired into a carton 48 or a sleeve. Opposed sides of the tube are then spread apart or tucked in by spreader arms 22 or gusset folders (69, Fig. 11), respectively, and the welding or sealing jaws move together to form the next bottom seam. The mandrel then moves into contact with the closed welding or sealing jaws 33, 34, Fig. 7, to form the opposed rim folds 60. In the embodiment utilizing spreader arms, the spreading and welding or sealing operations produce ears, comprising double layers of tube material; at the ends of the seam, and the layers of each ear are welded or sealed together by respective vertically reciprocable pressers 44 co-operating with the welding or sealing jaws. During return movement of the mandrel, the bottom region of the tube is gripped between the slidable inserts 14 and the pressure members. After separation of the sealing jaws 33, 34 and disengagement of the pressure members 30, the rim folds 60 are gripped by the tongs 11 and when a bag length of tube has been drawn from the mandrel 14, the tube is cut by a knife 39 and co-operating backup member 43. The welding or sealing jaws 33, 34 are complementarily shaped to produce a kinked seam.
