Abstract

1372726 Films GENERAL ENG CO (RADCLIFFE) Ltd 10 March 1972 [13 March 1971] 6824/71 Heading B5B An apparatus for oscillating and re-orienting extruded plastics material tube or film 103 includes take-off rollers 100, 101 adapted to be oscillated about the longitudinal axis of the tube or film approaching the take-off roller to create a helical twist in the tube, and film re-orienting means oscillatable with and at the same angular rate as the take off rollers, including at least two turner bars 105, 107 he axes of which are disposed angularly relative to the axes of the take off rollers, whereby, in ue, film passing therethrough is re-oriented, and at least two guide elements 108 disposed with their axes parallel to and minimally offset from the axis of oscillation of the take-off rollers, between which re-oriented film is, in use, passed for delivery to a non- oscillatory reeling or winding mechanism. As shown, a guide roller 106 may be located between the two turner bars, which are suitably disposed so that the first turner bar 105 has its longitudinal axis in a plane substantially at right angles to the axis of oscillation of the take off rollers, and the second 107 having its longitudinal axis in a plane parallel to the axis of oscillation of the take off rollers. In use, the first turner bar preferably turns the film to reverse its direction of movement and simultaneously displace its direction of movement by approximately 45 degrees in the plane of the film. Preferably the turner bars have a rounded surface, and are hollow and apertured at spaced intervals so that they may be supplied with air or other gas so as to provide a gaseous cushion at the surface over which the tube or film slides during re-orientation. The guide roller and turner bar system is suitably mounted upon an oscillatable table; in this way the system can be rotated through substantially a complete revolution in one direction and then reversed. Alternatively, the guide elements can be non-oscillatory.
