Abstract
1372672 Desulphurizing Steel Melts THYSSEN NIEDERRHEIN A G HUTTEN-UND WALZWERKE 23 Feb 1973 [1 March 1972] 8887/73 Heading C7D Steel melts are desulphurized by deoxidizing the melt, covering the melt either during or immediately after deoxidation with a basic slag containing less than 4% FeO and blowing fine grained calcium and/or fine grained calcium compounds (e.g. calcium carbide and calcium-silicon-iron compound) into the slag covered melt by means of a neutral carrier gas (e.g. argon) to a depth of at least 2,000 m.m. the melt having a temperature of at least 1530‹C. The slag may comprise CaO, Ca F2, Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , FeO and small amounts of MnO, P 2 O 5 and MgO and the deoxidized melt may contain a strong deoxidizing agent (e.g. aluminium) in an amount greater than 0.015%. The iron oxide content of the slag may be reduced by the calcium and/or calcium compounds which may be blown into the melt by means of a dipping lance and the process may be carried out in a ladle lined with dolomite, magnesite or material of greater than 70% alumina content equipped with a gate valve.
