Abstract

1371426 Radio navigation INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 13 April 1972 [20 April 1971] 17059/72 Heading H4D A known airborne TACAN apparatus incorporates automatic gain control (A.G.C.) of receiving I.F. amplifier 6, the A.G.C. voltage being derived by an integrator 15 (of time constant T 0 about one second) the input to which is taken from an AND gate 15 supplied from a circuit 14 which introduces a delay such that the second pulse of a responding pulse pair overlaps the pulse produced by a monostable 12. If a high amplitude signal is received, amplifier 6 saturates and the receiver may remain blocked at high gain and no further pulse pair can be decoded. According to the invention the blocking is alleviated by adding a circuit between the points a, b. Said circuit (in the embodiment) consists of a circuit 17 which delivers a logic level "1" when its input is a D.C. voltage close to E or otherwise a logic level "0" ; a NOT gate 18; a multivibrator 19 delivering a logic level "1" every T 2 seconds, where T 2 is approximately equal to T 0 ; an AND gate 20; and an OR gate 21. When a distorted output (due to amplifier 6 saturation) issues from decoder 9, 10, 12 cannot operate correctly and no pulse is produced at the output of mono-stable 12 thereby blocking the receiver. After a time logic level "0" issues from circuit 17 thus producing an A.G.C. voltage proportional to the amplitude of the output of detector 7 whereby the gain of amplifier 6 is reduced and the receiver unblocked. Circuit 17 may comprise an operational amplifier (22, Fig. 2, not shown) with a negative feedback circuit of a specified time constant, followed by an inverter (26).
