Abstract

1370936 Resin-fibre composites GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 29 Sept 1971 [2 Nov 1970] 45428/71 Heading D1R [Also in Division C3] 5 to 9 parts of a tow or bundle of carbon fibres is impregnated with 1 to 5 parts of an aliphatically unsaturated imide comprising either (a) a mixture comprising a malimide and a bis-imide or (b) a reaction product of from 1 to 4 moles of II per mole of an arylene diamine where R is hydrogen, a monovalent hydrocarbon radical or a halogenated monovalent hydrocarbon radical, R', is a divalent organic radical of at least two carbon atoms, and X is hydrogen, methyl, chloro or mixtures thereof. The carbon fibres may be carbonised polyacrylonitrile, cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate polyvinylchloride or polyacetylene. They are preferably aligned substantially parallel. The prepeg is moulded at 150‹C to 200‹C at 10 p.s.i. to 1000 p.s.i. pressure. A vacuum may be applied. In Example 1 the resin comprised a solution of 3 parts n-phenyl-malimide and 1 part N N'- p, p'-diphenylmethane-bismaleimide in methylene dichloride. In Example 2 the above mentioned bisimide (5 parts) was reacted with p, p' diamino diphenylmethane at 160‹C. In example 4 equal parts of the two components of example 1 were heated at 165‹C, then one part of methylene dianiline added with renewed heating. Many examples of R, R', and R" are listed.
