Abstract

1370659 Planographic printing surfaces INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 6 Dec 1971 [4 Jan 1971] 56456/71 Heading G2M [Also in Division B6] A planographic printing surface having portions of differing surface energies for single contact printing of more than one colour is produced from an article comprising at least one electrically conductive metal layer and at least one coextensive light-sensitive surface layer, by imagewise exposing the light-sensitive layer; processing to remove exposed portions of the lightsensitive layer; revealing areas of the metal layer through the removed portions of the light-sensitive layer either as the result of processing or by a subsequent treatment; electrolytically or electrophoretically depositing on the revealed metal a material which has a surface energy which differs from those of the metal and the remaining lightsensitive layer so that the surfaces have different ink-accepting characteristics; then exposing additional selected portions of the area to light; processing the layer to remove additional exposed portions of the layer; and revealing additional areas of conductive metal through the removed portions of the layer. In preferred embodiments hydrophilic, oleophilic, siliconephilic and/or fluorophilic images are formed on a plate by selectively depositing oleophilic metal, silicone polymer or fluorocarbon, and/or by tanning developing and baking a silver halide emulsion. The images are produced photo-mechanically by using a photo-resist or etch-bleaching a silver halide emulsion.
