1370112 Cleaning cloths and pads PROCTER & GAMBLE Ltd 12 May 1972 [14 May 1971] 14884/71 Heading A4F [Also in Divisions B2 B5 and C5] A laminate comprises a fibrous cellulosic sheet having a water absorbency of at least 50 per cent by weight of the dry sheet and having a wet tear strength of at least 20g. Elmendorf tear units, together with a flexible sheet of foamed polymeric material, the laminate incorporating a detergent composition adapted to dissolve or be dispersed in water when the laminate is used therein. The laminate may be made by forming the cellular sheet in situ on the cellulosic sheet, by adhesively bonding the sheets with a conventional adhesive or by heat bonding a thin layer of polyethylene between the sheets. The detergent composition which may include conventional detergency builders such as condensed phosphates, polycarboxylates or silicates, sequestrants, soil suspending agents, anti-tarnishing agents, colours and perfumes may be conventional type based upon a surfactant material e.g. a straight chain C 12 to C 15 alkyl benzene sulphonate, an alkyl sulphate derived from a C 10 to C 20 fatty alcohol or an ethoxylated derivative thereof, a C 10 to C 15 alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonate or a condensation product of ethylene oxide with a C 10 to C 20 fatty alcohol, may be liquid and impregnated into the cellulosic material prior to or after lamination, a solid adhered to one of the sheet materials prior to lamination; alternatively, the detergent composition may be encapsulated e.g. in a water soluble material such as polyvinyl alcohol and encapsulated material adhered to one of the sheets or enclosed between the sheets. In yet another embodiment, the detergent composition is admixed with the foam-forming reactants. The foamed polymeric material may be a polyurethane, a polyvinyl chloride, a natural rubber, a latex rubber, a synthetic rubber or a modified cellulose acetate. The fibrous cellulosic material may be a crepe paper or a wet strength paper. In the examples:- (1) two creped papers are bonded with a PVC, the product being impregnated by spraying with a liquid detergent composition comprising sodium C 12 alcohol triethoxylate sulphate and C 12 dimethyl amine oxide and bonded to a polyurethane foam and (2) a wet strength paper is bonded to a polyurethane foam and the resultant laminate impregnated with a liquid detergent composition comprising sodium C 12 alkyl benzene sulphonate, sodium C 12 alcohol triethoxylate sulphate and C 12 fatty acid monoethanolamide.
