Abstract
1369592 Air filter for I.C. engine GENERAL MOTORS Ltd 16 Sept 1971 [17 Sept 1970] 44391/70 Heading BIT An air filter for an I.C. engine comprises a one-piece casing formed as a plastics blow moulding and having an inlet 3, outlet 8 and an annular access opening 10, opposite the outlet, through which a foamed polyurethane filter element 2 is inserted, the surface 14 of the element being impervious and pressing resiliently against the casing to close opening 10. When the casing is moulded outlet 8 and opening 10 are closed by walls shown in dotted lines, which are subsequently cut away. Thimble-like extensions of one or both of the top and bottom casing walls support the interior of the element 2. Surface 14 may be formed by heating an initially pervious element or may be part of the original impervious surface of the element which is cut away elsewhere. Tubular extension 16, 17 of inlet 3 comprises corrugations which enable metal end 17 to be located near to or away from the hot engine. Figs. 1, 2 (not shown) illustrate a simpler construction.
