1369504 Compacting metal powder strip METAL INNOVATIONS Inc 2 Sept 1971 41075/71 Heading B5A Metal powder is shaped into a compacted green strip of uniform thickness and density by discharging it from a vertically adjustable hopper 14 on to a delivery tray 16 which is preferably tilted slightly and is asymmetrically vibrated longitudinally so that the powder 28 is both consolidated and shaken forward into a layer which is deposited in strip-like form 28a on to the surface of a roller 11 and conveyed thereby into the nip where it is compacted into a strip 12 which may be trimmed if required, treated in a controlled atmosphere and hot rolled. Preferably the rate of feed of the powder on to the roll is controlled to ensure constant density throughout by varying the amplitude of the oscillations of the vibrator 19 by means of a controller 34 responsive to changes in the power consumption of the mill motor 33 due to change in the load on the rollers with variation in power density. The control equipment is first set to give the correct feed rate for a given roller gap and speed with a particular powder. Other methods of detecting the powder density of the compacted strip may be utilized to effect control of the vibrator amplitude. Suitable dimensions for apparatus to compact a low oxide iron powder of specified composition are given.
