Abstract

1368082 Heating liquids by passage of a current MARSTON EXCELSIOR Ltd 8 May 1972 [10 May 1971] 13918/71 Heading H5H A liquid flow type heater comprises two electrodes 18, 17, a metal sheathed plastics member 15, and liquid inlet/outlet sleeves 14, 13 secured to insulating end caps 12, 11 of the insulating body 10, openings 16 in the recessed top and bottom of the member 15 allowing flow of liquid between the electrodes and the member such that electric current passes from one electrode, through the liquid to the metal sheathing and from there through the liquid to the other electrode. The electrodes extend to within 5 degrees arc of each other (Fig. 2) and the metal sheathing extends so as to maintain uniform spacing between the sheathing of the member 15 and each electrode over the extent of each electrode. Alternatively the insulating body, electrodes and the sheathed member may be frusto-conical in construction and means to adjust the separation of the sheathed member relative to the electrodes may be provided (Fig. 3) not shown. The electrodes may be of titanium with a coating of iridium, rhodium, an alloy of indium or rhodium with platinum or a rhodium, iridium platinum alloy.
