Abstract

1368034 Plate heat exchangers APV CO Ltd 13 April 1973 [24 April 1972] 18950/72 Heading F4S A heat exchanger comprises a stack of spacedapart plates 1 (e.g. of thin metal, plastics or rubber) defining between each adjacent pair of plates a flow space in which are a plurality of parallel blocking elements (e.g. rods or bars) 2 bridging and blocking the flow space in the flat condition of the plates (Fig. 1), the blocking elements in adjacent flow spaces being relatively staggered to permit flexing of the plates under operating conditions. The pitch Y of the elements 2 may be such as to produce eddies in the fluids and one or both fluids may be subjected to flow or pressure pulsations so that the plates flex between the two extreme positions shown respectively in Figs. 4a and 4b and effect a pumping action on the fluids. The ends of the elements 2 may be embedded in marginal gaskets 3 which separate adjacent plates. When plastics or rubber plates are utilized, these may include moulded-in gaskets supported by moulded-in stiffening struts (7, Fig. 5) of metal, glass fibre, reinforced plastics material, or carbon fibre.
