Abstract

1367623 Hydroformylation IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 Nov 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 55026/70 Headng C2C Aldehydes are produced by reacting olefines at elevated temperatures and pressures with a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in a molecular ratio greater than 4 : 1 in the presence of a hydroformylation catalyst containing iridium such as iridium metal or tetrairidium dodecacarbonyl. In order to increase the yield of aldehyde and to decrease the hydrogenation of the olefine a biphyllic ligand may be added to the reaction mixture. Such a ligand may be a compound of trivalent phosphorus, antimony, or arsenic, for example, tributyl phosphine, trimethyl phosphite or a complex with the iridiumcontaining catalyst HIr(CO)(PPh 3 ) 3 .
