Abstract

1367511 Purification of waste water from acrylonitrile production ERDOLCHEMIE GmbH and BAYER AG 12 Oct 1971 [15 Oct 1970] 47393/71 Heading BIB Contaminated water, which has been used to wash gaseous reaction products from the catalytic oxidation of propylene and ammonia for the production of acrylonitrile, is freed from acetonitrile in distillation column I and is then boiled in column 2 which is heated by element 8 supplied with steam from evaporator 4 wherein the water flowing from the base of column 2 is evaporated under a pressure greater than atmospheric; the condensate formed in element 8 (i.e. purified water) being discharged through conduit 9 into a flowing water system. A concentrate containing up to 60 wt% of high-boiling and resinous organic compounds is withdrawn from evaporator 4 through outlet 10, and may be passed to an incinerator. Column 2 should contain 7 to 20 materialexchange baffles, and is preferably operated at a gauge-pressure of 0.4 to I atm.; and 0.4 to 1 part of steam is supplied to element 8 per part of water entering column 2. A small proportion of an organic amine boiling above 170‹C may be added to the water flowing down column 2, and/or to the liquid boiling in evaporator 4.
