1367050 Laying fabric M FONIO 13 April 1973 [26 April 1972] 17902/73 Heading D1S [Also in Division B8] A fabric laying carriage for reciprocation over a table 2 comprises a supply station 9 for rotatably supporting a spool 8 or rod carrying a roll of fabric 7, a reserve station 9a for supporting a further spool 8a or rod carrying a roll of fabric 7a, a receptacle 24 for receiving spools 8 or rods discharged from the supply station, downwardly inclined guide means 12 leading from the reserve station to the supply station and thence to the receptacle 24, means to discharge a spool or rod from the supply station and means to disengage a further spool or rod from the reserve station, the discharging and disengaging means being interconnected and operable simultaneously by a single actuating means. As shown, the fabric 5 is fed from the roll 7 on the spool 8 provided with locking cones 25, over a roller 6 to feed rollers 4. A bracket 10 is raised after each layer is laid during the return movement of the carriage. At the end of the forward run of the carriage, the fabric is cut by a device 11. The spool 8 is received in recesses in standards 9 and, at the reserve station, a spool 8a is supported on standards 9a connected to the standards 9 by inclined rods 12. An upwardly-inclined wing-like member 13 is fixed to each standard 9a and cooperates with an arm 15 of a lever 14 to support the spool 8a. The lever 14 is connected by a rod 18 to an operating lever 19 and is retained in the Fig. 1 position by a helical spring 20. An arm 16 of the lever 14 is connected by a rod 17 to a lever 21 pivoted to a standard 9 and which has an arm 22 located beneath the end of the spool 8. Inclined members 23 extend to the receptacle 24. In use, when the spool 8 is empty, the carriage is stopped either manually or automatically and the operator raises the lever 19 to lower the arm 15 to allow the spool 8a to slide down the guides 12. Simultaneously, the lever 21 is turned anti-clockwise so that the arm 22 pushes the spool 8 out of its seating and thence down the guides 23 into the receptacle 24. The spool 8a is prevented from entering the seating in the standards 9 by the arm 23 until the lever 19 is lowered and the lever 14 returned to the Fig. 1 position. The laying operation is recommenced at the same position in which the previous lay was interrupted. When the carriage reaches the end of its run, a fresh reserve spool is mounted on the standards 9a. The carriage may be provided with a plurality of reserve stations arranged in series and, when a fresh roll is fed to the supply station, the reserve rolls each move forward one station.
