Abstract

1366913 Making pulleys; jointing by stamping; bending P J VAN BUSSEL 13 Sept 1971 42547/71 Headings B3A B3E and B3Q [Also in Division F2] A pulley is made by superimposing a pair of metal discs either before or after shaping and the discs are clinched together in an annular zone between the hub portion and the rim portion by folding the discs together in the zone using a die set. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the discs are shaped together in a die set 16, 18 to form an intermediate blank with a peripheral groove 22. The blank has a double-thickness hub portion 26 and a rim portion 24. The blank is transferred to a second die set 46, 48, Fig. 4, wherein the side walls of the hub-portion are folded over the groove to form an annular S-shaped interlock between the discs. The clinched blank is then transferred to a further die set 83, 85, Fig. 6, where it is punched by a punch 88. The die set 83, 85 is rotated and a roller 92 is advanced to separate the rims 40, 42 of the pulley blank. A pair of shaving tools 110, 112 shave off excess metal from the tips of the flanges 102, 104 formed by the roller to balance the pulley. In a similar embodiment, Figs. 8-11 (not shown), one of the discs has a central opening (120) so that the hub portion of the finished pulley is only formed of one layer of metal (150). A further embodiment, Figs. 16, is composed of a pair of pulleys each made from a pair of metal discs clinched together and formed with telescopically interfitting hub portions. These hub portions are bulged outwards 248, 250 in a die set 240, 246 to hold them together. The rims of the pulleys are separated before the pulleys are joined and abut against each other 254, 256. The pulleys may be each formed of an apertured disc and a solid disc so that the hub portion of the multi pulley only has a double thickness, Fig. 19 (not shown). Another embodiment, Fig. 21, has the discs joined together by a pair of annular clinch zones 342, 344 formed in the die sets 294, 306 and 330, 332. The clinch zones may be in the same plane or be formed in a pair of spaced planes, Fig. 24 (not shown). Several pulleys may be telescoped together to form multi groove pulleys, Fig. 30 (not shown).
