1366863 Chairs combined with tables; stackable chairs; linking chairs in rows G MILLIGAN 18 Aug 1971 [20 May 1970] 24370/70 Headings A4H and A4U A stackable chair is provided with a table 16 mounted on the chair by a U-shaped swinging frame 33 so that the table can be moved from an operative position in front of the chair, as shown, to a stowed position against the backrest 14 of the chair, Fig. 3 (not shown) so as not to interfere during stacking. The frame 33 has an upright portion 35 having a cylindrical block engaged in a diametrical bore of a boss 40 on the end of a horizontal axle of frame 33 journalled in a fixed member 38. The table is moved to its stowed position by rotation about the axis of the axle, and it is moved to a side position by rotation of the block in boss 40 about the axis of upright portion 35. The table 16 has a smooth surface 44, e.g. of plastics, but its underside 46 is padded, as are the seat 12 and back rest 14. In an alternative arrangement, in the stowed position, the table fits between the lower edge of the backrest 14 and the seat 12. During stacking braces 27 of each chair rest on horizontal portions 26 of the chair below, detents 60 on braces 27 engaging portions 26. The chair has a tongue (50), Fig. 2 (not shown) at one side and a socket 52 at the other side so that chairs may be secured side-byside by engaging the tongue of one chair in the socket of an adjacent chair. The table may be held in the operative and stowed positions by spring clips or spring-loaded ball-catch devices. The chair frame comprises tubular steel and the seat and back-rest may comprise plastics.
