Abstract

1366854 Treating sewage J FROST 6 Aug 1971 [6 May 1970] 10788/70 Heading C1C A method of lowering the B.O.D. of sewage (or other effluent) comprises admitting the sewage in particulate form to a column, admitting hot oxygen or oxygen-containing gas to the bottom of the column with a velocity which suspends the particles in the form of liquid and optionally wet solids, and removing evaporated liquid and dry solids if present, from the top of the column. In the embodiment shown sewage is sprayed on to belt 10 associated with pressure roller 12. The bulk of liquid is collected in trough 16 and the bulk of the solids in hopper 14. Liquids with entrained solids is passed by pump and grinder 20 to column 26 where it is sprayed downwardly from jets 24. The sprayed particles are contacted by air heated in heat exchanger 32 and supplied by fan 28. The evaporated liquid and dried solids are carried by the air stream to cyclone separator 38, the solids being discharged through flap valve 48. The separated gas is passed through heated catalyst (e.g. Pt) chamber where any ammonia or methane is broken down, and heat exchanger 32 where it heats incoming air, to a condenser (not shown). The condensed liquid may have urea removed therefrom. The air may be at 130-150‹ F.
