Abstract

1365558 Resorcinol-unsaturate polymers; rubber compositions MONSANTO CO 29 July 1971 [30 July 1970] 35686/71 Headings C3R and C3P [Also in Division D1] A composition suitable for treating a fibre to enhance its capacity to adhere to rubber is prepared by condensing an aldehyde with a mixture of resorcinol and an essentially saturated polymer, the mixture being obtained by the acidic condensation of resorcinol and an olefin of 3-10 carbon atoms having 2 or more sites capable of reacting with resorcinol at least one of which is an ethylenically unsaturated group, the molar ratio of olefin to resorcinol being 0À1 to 2 : 1, the aldehyde being selected from saturated aliphatic C 1-6 aldehydes having straight or branched chains, paraformaldehyde and paraldehyde. In an embodiment the molar ratio of olefin to resorcinol is 0À1 to 0À6 : 1, and the molar ratio of aldehyde to resorcinol is 0À3 to 0À5 : 1. The aldehyde condensate may be dissolved in an organic solvent or an aqueous alkaline medium. The olefin may be a mono- or dihalo-olefin or an acyclic or cyclic diolefin. A conventional RFL adhesive comprising a resorcinol-HCHO condensate and a butadienestyrene-vinyl-pyridine latex or the latex alone may be added to the composition. The fibretreating composition may alternatively comprise the said essentially saturated polymer of resorcinol and an olefin instead of the said aldehyde condensate. The fibre treated with the composition may be heat-treated at 250-500‹ F. for ¢-5 minutes, before it is embedded in a rubber which is then vulcanized. Suitable fibres are those of polyester, rayon, nylon, cotton, wool, wood cellulose, glass, Al, Cu, Sn, steel, brass-plated steel and Al-steel alloys. In examples 2-12 fibre-treating compositions are prepared by condensing formaldehyde with an essentially saturated polymer containing unreacted resorcinol prepared by the acidic condensation of resorcinol with any one of the following olefins: 1,4-dichloro-2-butene, allyl chloride, 1,3-dichloro-2-butene, 2,3-dichloropropene, 5,7-dimethyl, 1,6-octadiene, 1,7-octadiene, 3-chloro-2-methyl propene, 3,4-dichloro- 1-butene, 1,5-cyclooctadiene, and 1,3-pentadiene, to which NH 4 OH is subsequently added. Single dip adhesive compositions are then prepared by mixing the above compositions with RFL or vinylpyridine styrene butadiene latex alone and water and polyester tire cords are dipped therein, heat-treated and then embedded in a rubber stock comprising natural rubber, oil-extended styrene-butadiene rubber, carbon black, stearic acid, zinc oxide, sulphur and sulphenamide, which is then cured. In examples 13-17 compositions are prepared comprising the essentially saturated polymer of resorcinol and the olefin and used in either a one dip adhesive composition containing the above latex or in a 2-dip system in which the polyester cord is first dipped into the said polymer composition and then into the latex alone. The polyester cords treated by either the 1- or 2-dip system are then treated as in Examples 2-12. The adhesive compositions can also be used to bond polyester cord to HRH rubber stocks containing in addition to the ingredients listed above precipitated silica, resorcinol and hexamethylenetetramine.
