1365246 Cutting glass bottles and like articles BRICMAR MFG CORP 27 Oct 1972 [10 May 1972] 49612/72 Heading C1M Apparatus for cutting glass bottles 20 or like articles comprises a base-plate 22 for supporting the bottom (20a) of the bottle on its flat upper surface, a post 28 extending upwardly from the plate 22 on which a cutting frame 26 with a cutting wheel 24 is slidably mounted, the cutting frame 26 being fixed as by screw 40b and nut 40c so that the wall 20b of the bottle can be scored by rotation of the bottle 20 while pressed on to the base-plate and pressed against the eutting-wheel 24. The bottle 20 may be pressed against and positioned by an arm 30, Fig. 2, pivoted at 32 to the base-plate 22 and releasably secured at its other end by a bolt 36 passing through an arcuate slot 34 in the base-plate 22 and secured by nut 36c. After scoring, the cut is opened by tapping on the score line or by thermal shock. For bottles not having vertical walls, Fig. 6, the cutting frame 26, which has a key projection 26a fitting into a guide slot 28a in the post 28, is provided with a wedge 38 of U-shape which can be inserted between the cutting frame 26 and post 28 with the legs of the wedge either side of the key projection 26a. The wedge can be inserted from above as shown so that the cutting wheel 24 is angled to be perpendicular to the bottle wall 20b, or the wedge may be inserted from below. Opening along scored line.-As shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the apparatus may include a tapper 44 mounted on a boom 42 which can be secured to the post 28 which passes through a longitudinally extending opening 42a and is secured at the desired position of the tapper 44 by a bolt 44 passing through longitudinal slots 42b and a slot 28c in the post 28. The use of a single bolt 46 allows pivoting of the boom 42. The tapper 44 is slidable up and down in a cut-out 47c in a spool 47 and secured by a bolt 48, the spool 47 fitting on to a cradle 42c at the end of boom 42. The tapper 44 has mating sliding sections (44a and 44b), the section 44b having a hammer end 44c pivoted thereto which has pinion teeth (44e) engaging rack teeth (44f) on section 44a. The bottle 20 may be positively positioned by the arm 30 which has a position as in Fig. 9, the bolt 36 passing out through an enlarged opening 34a at the end of slot 34. Several alternative tapping means are disclosed, in particular, a shaped tapper 52 of heavy wire which may be secured as shown in Fig. 22 to a boom 60 secured to the cutting frame 26 on to a boom secured to the post 28 or direct, diagonally, to a plate which can be inserted into the mouth of the bottle.
